01 · Identify your registration
Practitioner and contractor registrations cover different roles
WA has two main builder registration categories. Practitioner registration is for individuals, who may be nominated supervisors of registered building contractors. Contractor registration is for individuals, partnerships and companies intending to trade as builders.[1][4]
If you are unsure which registration applies to you or your business, compare the category descriptions in the official builders’ registration guide before continuing.[1]
02 · Mark the renewal window
Renew every three years, before the expiry date
Practitioner and contractor registrations renew every three years. The WA renewal window opens 12 weeks before the licence expires and closes on the expiry date.[1]
Use your renewal reminder email for the application details that apply to your registration, and check the contact details held by the department if you are not receiving reminders.[7][8]
03 · Check the public record
Start with your licence number, then verify the whole record
You can use either the WA Government’s Find a registered building service provider page or the WA Online Licence Search to look up a builder.[2][4][5]
- Open Find a registered building service provider or go directly to the WA Online Licence Search.[4][5]
- On the Online Licence Search opening screen, enter the licence number to begin your lookup.[3][5]
- Check the name, registration number and licence type together. A practitioner and a contractor may share a registration number, so the number alone may not identify the correct record.[4][5]
If you cannot find the registration record, call the Licensing Branch on 1300 489 099 and ask for help locating it.[4]
04 · Follow the official renewal path
Open the renewal instructions for your category
Use the category-specific WA Government renewal page to continue to the official online renewal process. Refer to your renewal reminder email for the details needed for your application.[1][7][8]

Fees and documentation
Current 2026–27 application and renewal fees, the official renewal forms and the supporting registration requirements are listed in the WA builder catalogue match, checked on 17 October 2026. The exact building-work boundary at A$20,000 remains withheld there because the two linked official pages use conflicting wording.[1][7][8]
