01 · Check the record
Use the Service NSW builder or tradesperson licence checker
Open the official checker and select “Check online”. Enter an available search detail in the search bar, then select the search icon. The page lists a licensee name, licence number, licence type, Australian Business Number (ABN), Australian Company Number (ACN), or a location such as suburb, postcode or local government area as search options.[2]
- Select “Check online” on the Service NSW transaction.
- Enter one of the identifying details you have.
- Select the search icon to view the available licence record.
For a digital trade licence or credential shown in the Service NSW app, the app provides a QR-code scan to check its status or whether it is genuine. This is an app-based credential check, alongside the online search.[2][3]
Check a licence on Service NSW02 · Renew the individual licence
Follow the renewal notice and online prompts
Service NSW says you can renew an individual contractor licence online when you receive its renewal notice. It asks for your licence number and either the renewal number from the notice or your full personal details, plus fee payment.[1]
- When the renewal notice arrives, open the individual contractor renewal transaction.
- Have your licence number and either the notice’s renewal number or your full personal details ready.
- Select “Renew online”, select “Next”, then follow the prompts to complete the application and payment.
Building Commission NSW assesses the application and notifies you of the result after assessment. The official page says that if more information is requested, processing may take longer. You must wait until the new licence is issued before trading.[1]
Read the official renewal instructions03 · Keep certificate changes separate
A tradesperson certificate class change is a different process
Service NSW describes a separate in-person process to add or change classes on a tradesperson certificate after gaining further qualifications. Its page names drainers, gasfitters, plumbers, roof plumbers and water plumbers as certificate holders. It says that if the certificate expires in less than six weeks, it must be renewed before the classes can be varied.[4]
The under-six-week condition belongs to that tradesperson certificate class-change process. It is not the individual contractor licence renewal sequence above, and this source does not establish that it applies to an electrician’s licence. Check the exact credential shown on your record with Service NSW if you are unsure which process applies.[1][4]

Confirm credential-specific details with the regulator
The current NSW electrician catalogue match lists source-checked renewal cycles, published 2026–27 fees and the official forms page. See NSW electrician, checked on 17 October 2026. The exact fee for a provisional electrical tradesperson certificate was not identified in the fee schedule checked, and remains labelled unverified. Match the renewal transaction to the credential on your record and follow any request from Building Commission NSW.[1]
The official renewal transaction does require fee payment and says Building Commission NSW may request more information. The exact amount and case-specific requirements should be confirmed through the official process.[1]
